Saigon’s Best Foods, Drinks, and Desserts to Keep You Cool

One of the best ways to beat the summer in Saigon is to eat and drink the most cooling things you could ever find.

Sweet soup

There is nothing more refreshing than having a cool fresh glass of sweet soup in the middle of a blazing hot day. As a tropical country famous for its diversity of fruits, there are endless options of sweet soups and various recipes to make them with ingredients ranging from fruits, vegetables to beans, glutinous rice, and tapioca powder. In Southern Vietnam, people sometimes pour coconut milk on the face for a richer and creamier taste. Whether served hot or cold, this sweet beverage is still an amazing dish that cannot be resisted. Yet, we recommend eating it with minced ice for a better experience in this weather.

Baluts in Vietnam are usually boiled and eaten with ground pepper salt, chili, ginger and Vietnamese mint leaves (or ‘rau răm’). Ginger helps warm your stomach and ‘rau răm’ helps improve your digestion system. Fried baluts or stir-fried baluts with tamarind are other ways to enjoy this snack.

9. Nước sâm

Nước sâm is one of the most popular drinks in Saigon, especially in the summertime. Although ‘sâm’ means ginseng in English, there is actually no ginseng in this dark-colored drink. In fact, it is a combination of more than 24 different medicinal ingredients from leaves or roots that make it a healthy beverage with a cooling effect for the body, but rarely can you see all of them in one glass of nước sâm. The main herbs are usually sugar cane, corn silk, pandan leaves, pouzolzia zeylanica (cây thuc giòi), plantago asiatica (cây mã đ). Nước sâm is also known to help with high blood pressure, diabetes or some infectious diseases. However, this drink might be too bitter for some people to enjoy so they usually add a little sugar.

Pennywort juice

As a member of the carrot and dill family, pennywort contains many vitamins and minerals that help to maintain youthfulness, purifying the blood, curing nervous conditions, improving memory and vitality and relieving arthritis pain. This blended vegetable juice is suitable when you are eating a lot of greasy food or feeling sick as it is not only a drink but is also medicine. The Saigonese also add green beans or fresh coconut water into the blender for more sweetness and lightness, giving the drink a slightly different taste to the original juice but still nutritious and delicious. Like sugar cane juice, pennywort juice can be found near schools, universities, markets or parks.

  1. What some amazing sounding cooling ideas! I of course love ice cream but I most definitely want to try the Bingsu, how colourful is that and it sounds like it would taste amazing!

  2. I grew up in Panama and they would sell sugar cane juice extracted from the actual plant and it was so good and great during the summer months.

  3. These are some delicious looking dessert. This fruit bowl is very eye-catchy and looks delightful. yummy!! I want to try all of these desserts.

  4. I feel cool already!!! Lol.. Great stuff, am a big fan of ice cream, but I am really open minded when it comes to trying new food.. Sweet soup and beingsu sound like my kinda thing..

  5. I love Vietnamese foods, I fell in love with it when I visited the country a few years ago. One thing that I wouldn’t be able to eat though would be balut. No matter how nutritious and healthy can be, I can’t get the idea of what’s in it out of my head.
