How to get to Vung Tau?

Vũng Tàu is a popular destination for not only tourists but also local residents from surrounding provinces. About 125 km away from Saigon, a day trip to Vung Tau is probably the best and the quickest way if you want a few hours to withdraw from the noisy city. By the way, take a note that if you do not want to see a beach which is full of people, do not go on the weekends.

By Motorbike (or Car)

There are a few routes which are really straightforward. And they usually take you 2 hours to get to Vung Tau. To have a better view, check the provided google map of each route.

Route 1: From Dien Bien Phu Street >> Highway 52 >> Cross Dong Nai Bridge >> turn right to Highway 51 and keep on going on this road >> Ba Ria city >> Vung Tau.

Route 2: Same as route 1 but take Pham Van Dong Street instead. Why? Just let you know that there is one underrated street with a few good views along the way that can also lead us out of this city (fortunately it is underrated, and big trucks and heavy-weight vehicles are prohibited from entering this road.) After a few minutes of traveling from the start of Pham Van Dong St, you will encounter Binh Loi Bridge where you can get a pretty awesome view of Sai Gon River.

There is one optional stop which is Buu Long Pagoda. Located outside the busy city, the pagoda is a completely peaceful fort of the soul. The unique token is the palatial appearance of the main pagoda building having some Thailand and India influences. Before crossing Dong Nai Bridge, turn right into Nguyen Xien St. Check the map for the exact location.

Route 3: From Truong Chinh Street >> turn right at An Suong intersection to Highway 1A >> Highway 52 >> cross Dong Nai Bridge >> turn right to Highway 51 and keep on going on this road >> Ba Ria city >> Vung Tau.

Please be careful at hammock coffee shops. Always keep an eye of your vehicles and belongings. This is not a silly prejudice against those shops but there were many cases of robbery or vehicle sabotage which hammock coffee shops are involved.

Before getting the show on the road, have your bikes checked first. Change the tires if necessary. However, do not get too worried as there are many repair shops along the highway. Good luck out there and have a good vacation!

By Hydrofoil

Having a seat on the comfy chair of a hydrofoil is worth considering if you do not want to ride those Vietnamese streets so much. VINA – PETRO EXPRESS is recommended. A round-trip ticket for one adult is 400 000 VND (about $18.) As they promised, you will arrive at Vung Tau within 1 hour and 20 minutes.

By Taxis

Taxi is the least favorable suggestion since the cost is pretty higher than the other options. Anyway, it is still worth considering. Here are a few taxi brands that I usually take:

Mai Linh: (+84)8 38 38 38 38

Vinasun: (+84)8 38 27 27 27

Vina: (+84)8 38 11 11 11

Hoang Long: (+84)8 38 68 68 68

Saigontourist: (+84)8 38 45 88 88

  1. I’d love to “phượt” so I’d prefer the motorcycle one. Usually I go there by route 1, but now I have more choices. Maybe the next time I’ll try the route 2 and stop by Buu Long pagoda. Thanks for sharing such useful information.

  2. Me and my friend rode a motorbike to Vung Tau once and it was awesome. If you are tired after a long ride, just stop for a few minutes to drink some water and then continue. It only takes you 2 hours so it’s really convenient. However, next time we would consider to go by hydrofoil cause we haven’t tried it before. Thanks for your sharing

  3. I think going to Long Hai beach would be also a great choice if you want to get away from a crowed city in the weekends and holidays. Fewer people are there, if not to say a lot fewer.

  4. The best ways to travel to Vung Tau must be by car or hydrofoil, I assume. Other modes of transport are good, too. I’ll recommend this post to my friends!
